Jon Sylvia began training in the martial arts in 1965 at the Eureka Judo and Jujitsu Club. He began wrestling in 1969 and competed throughout junior high, high school and college. After college, Jon served a tour in the United States Marine Corps and then began a career in Law Enforcement. Jon retired from the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office as a Sheriff's Sergeant after 25 years of service and is currently working as a part-time Deputy. Jon was also a police defensive tactics and arrest and control instructor for many years at the College of the Redwoods Administration of Justice Center. Jon began training at Jobu Shin Kan in 1987 under Prof. Dennis Estes. Jon was promoted to Yodan (4th degree black belt) in 2001 by the American Judo and Jujitsu Federation. He became the head instructor of Jobu Shin Kan in 2003. Jon became a member of the Pacific Jujitsu Alliance in 2010 and was promoted to Godan (5th degree black belt) in 2012.
